Considerations When Shopping for Splices, Split Bolts and Spiral Wraps

Splices secure and form an electrical connection when two wires are joined together. Split bolt connectors are used to mechanically join two or more wires together. Spiral wraps are designed to be flexible enough to hold bundles of wires and cables together. They also protect wiring and cabling from environmental abrasion.

When shopping for splices, split bolts and spiral wraps, here are a few points to consider:

Splices

Type of splice - what type of splice do you need for your project? (i.e. half lap, bevel lap, tabled, or tapered finger splices).
Insulation - nylon insulated, or PVC-insulated, and non-insulated splices are available.
Maximum copper conductor size and minimum metric conductor sizing.
Maximum voltage - will the splice be able to withstand your voltage needs?
Wire size - splices are typically colour-coded according to wire size.
Certifications - is the splice industry approved and temperature rated for your application? (i.e. UL)
Installation Tools - consider what tools are needed to install the splice properly.

Split Bolts

Connection type and base material - what connection type does your project application require? (i.e. copper to copper)
Certifications - Is the split bolt industry approved and temperature rated for your application? (i.e. UL, CSA)
Maximum Voltage - will the split bolt be able to withstand your voltage needs?
Sizing specifications - what size split bolt will fit into your current project application?
Special features - consider corrosion resistance, range taking, hex design.

Spiral Wraps

Material composition - what type of material is best suited for your project application? (i.e. polyethylenes: flame retardant, weather resistant; nylon: weather resistant, low-smoke, halogen free, etc.)
Sizing specifications and colour - consider the length per reel, bundle diameter range, outside diameter, and wall thickness. Multiple colours allow for easy identification of different cable bundles.
Certifications and temperature rating - what temperature range is the spiral wrap approved for? Is the spiral wrap industry approved for my application?
Voltage rating - will the spiral wrap be able to withstand your voltage needs?
Installation Tool - is the installation tool required supplied in each package?
